The Unicorn in Egypt and North Africa

Egypt is a land known for its incredibly rich history within the mystical and wisdom traditions. Egyptian hieroglyphics have a symbol to represent the unicorn, showing that the unicorn has been an aspect of Egyptian civilization since the culture’s earliest days. Inside the pyramid at Memphis, there is a mural showing four antelopes and a unicorn being led by a man. This is only one of many mysterious esoteric depictions of the unicorn within the sacred structures of Egypt. This rich legacy of the unicorn in Egypt was made quite visible to Louys Paradis, a 16th century Parisian doctor, who stated that he saw a unicorn in Alexandria.

There are an assortment of myths about the unicorn in present-day Sudan and other regions in close proximity to Egypt. In Sudan, the unicorn is known as the u’nasa. The u’nasa is said to resemble a donkey in both shape and size, although it has a boar’s tail and a single horn. The Tire Bina people of Sudan utilize the u’nasa and its horn as a cure and guard against poison.
